Cancer cells divide rapidly and continuously, creating tumors that crown out normal cells and eventually rob healthy tissues of nutrients. Cells of an advanced tumor can separate from tumor and travel to distant sites in body, where they can create new tumors. Cancer as a genetic disease cancer happens as a result of fundamental defects in the regulation of cell division. Many cancers do not run in families at all knudsons multistep model of cancer: retinoblastoma usually develops in one eye but sometimes appears in both. 2 mutations are needed to create cancer: today we know that cancer is a genetic disease, although some cancers are inherited, most tumors arise from somatic mutations or in response to environmental mutagens.
