Social control: mechanisms by which behaviour is constrained and directed into acceptable channels, thus maintaining conformity; can be formal (criminal justice) or informal (scolding, shunning) Law: the highest level of social control, characterized by the presence of authority and intention of universal application, obligation, and sanction. For example: the jivaro of ecuador allow a life for a life, so when a murder takes place, the family of the deceased will raid the household of the perpetrator and kill him or a close male relative. Court legal systems: formal legal systems in which authority for settling disputes and punishing crimes is formally vested in a single individual or group; only exist in societies with centralized political leadership (chiefdoms or states); three categories: Incipient courts- judicial authorities meet, frequently informally, in private to discuss issues and determine solutions to be imposed. Evidence is not formally collected and the parties involved in these cases are not formally consulted.
