Review for cancer biology exam: three cancers responsible: men- prostate, lung & bronchus, colorectal women- breast, lung & bronchus, colorectal. Those four account for 50% of total deaths of all people who have cancer. We learned that the yeast cdc2 gene is involved in moving past the yeast start point in g1. The yeast cdc2 gene is involved in controlling the transmission from g2 to m phase. Cdc2 protein is a phospho protein which has protein kinase activity. Mutations that disrupt cdc2 kinase activity abolish cdc2 gene function. In human tumors the ras gene is mutated in about 25% of tumors. In the usa over 550,000 individuals die of cancer every year. The four phases of the cell cycle are g1, s, g2, m. Rouse sarcoma virus replicate within the host cell --> discovery of viral enzyme reverse transcriptase which allowed viral rna to be replicated into double stranded dna.
