Document Summary

Genetic engineering inserting cloned genes into an organism: transgenic organism- containing genes that originated in another organism, cloning genes making identical copies. Be(cid:272)ause the ge(cid:374)eti(cid:272) (cid:272)ode is (cid:374)early u(cid:374)i(cid:448)ersal, it"s possi(cid:271)le to transfer cloned genes between virtually any organism. Biotechnology- the use of natural biological systems to create a product or achieve some other end desired by humans. Recombinant dna technology: contains dna from 2 or more organisms. Human insulin made by bacterial cells: human gene removed. Inserted into plasmid: plasmid inserted into bacteria, bacteria produce insulin as if it was one of their own gene products. Human growth hormone (hgh) made this way. Polymerase chain reaction (pcr) amplifies specific dna sequences: cycles over and over again doubling amount of dna at each cycle. Dna fingerprinting: people differ in how many repeats, can use pcr to increase amount of dna sample, electrophoresis separates samples by size. Longer dna strands are larger and migrate less on the cell.
