The nuclei of certain elements behave as though they were spinning about an axis. These nuclei are said to possess an overall spin. 1. those with an odd number of protons. 2. those with an odd number of neutrons. Spins that are oriented in the opposite direction to the applied magnetic field, b0, have slightly higher energy than those oriented with the field. The difference in energy between the two types of spins depends on the strength of the applied magnetic field. At this point, the application of electromagnetic radiation of the right frequency will force the spins with lower energy to jump to the higher energy state.
