To engage in nursing is to embrace ways of knowing. The fundamental ways of knowing that constitute nursing. Empirical- factual knowledge that is based in basic and applied science as well as the human sciences (e. g. Personal- revealed through reflection and reflective practice- concerns self- understanding, empathy, and compassion (e. g. Ethical- core to nursing practice; knowing what is right and just- and what ought to be done in a patient care situation. Aesthetic- awareness of nursing in the moment of caring that facilitates enacting the wholeness of nursing care with patients and clients. Reflection- the process of engaging the self in attentive, critical, exploratory, and iterative (cid:523)frequent(cid:524) interactions with one"s thoughts and actions, and their underlying conceptual frame with a view to changing them and with a view on the change itself. Reflection is important so we can do things better the next day. 5 core components of reflection- transforms a thinking process into reflective thinking.
