Background and context

The monosaccharides are the basic and simplest type of carbohydrates in which hydrolysis is not possible. Glucose is the monosaccharide since it cannot be further hydrolyzed. In contrast to glucose, the other group which includes cellulose, lactose, and sucrose yields two monomeric units on hydrolysis.
