Overview:
In this assignment you will review the hierarchy of an organism and the systems of the body. You will choose one system in the body and complete a chart listing the different parts for each level of organization within this system. After completing the chart, you will answer some discussion questions about your chosen system.
Background Information:
The hierarchy of an organism describes the levels of organization within an organism. These levels of organization are defined by the size and complexity of their parts from smallest to largest. The smallest level of organization of living organisms is a cell. A cell is the most basic unit of structure and function. Cells combine to create tissues. There are 4 types of tissues that make up all of the body:
- Epithelial tissue forms the interior and exterior surfaces of the body. It creates surfaces for protection, absorption, and excretion.
- Muscular tissue makes up the organs that have voluntary and involuntary functions and forms the organs responsible for movement.
- Connective tissue forms binding, supporting, and transporting structures and usually contains collagen for strength.
- Nervous tissue is made of neurons and glial cells that transport nerve impulses across the body.
Multiple types of tissues work together to create organs that carry out a specific function within the body. When multiple organs and their functions interact, they form an organ system. All of the organs within an organ system work toward a common function, such as digestion or respiration. Many organ systems then work together to create a functioning organism, such as a human. There are 11 organ systems within a human and each system plays a crucial role in the body. The names of each system are listed below.
Remember: The hierarchy of an organism starts with cells, then tissues, then organs, then organ systems, and then the organism.
Assignment:
On your own sheet of paper, draw and fill out the chart below and then answer the discussion questions.
Discussion Questions:
1. What system did you choose? What is the purpose of this system?
2. What are some of the different functions of this system?
3. Where could each tissue type be found? Give an example of each tissue type and where it can be found in the system you chose.
4. Why is this system important to the body?
Submission:
You will submit a completed chart and answers to the discussion questions written in complete sentences. You will be graded based on the rubric on the following page.
