Why does HIV have such a long incubation period (1-8 years)? Please explain the REASON why it has such a long incubation period, and relate your answer to the pathogenesis of AIDS. Thank you.

(Note: In humans, the mean time between exposure to Ebola and the appearance of the first signs and symptoms—i.e., the incubation period—is 12.7 days) (Eichner et al., 2011)

I think this study period is enough to see whether virus is existing in some sample species or not. This period is sufficient to determine that the infected animals can survive long enough to pass the virus to another because the the incubation period for human is 12.7 days and in the case study, Brian found that none of the tested animals exhibited obvious symptoms of Ebola infection, nor did any die due to Ebola infection. In other words, snake, spider and bats can live with virus together. This period is long enough to show that a species is a potential reservoir species because from the data we can see that virus is present in snake, mouse, fruit bat, and spider after 28 days which greater than human incubation period.

This is what put, I didn't feel it right. Could someone help me with this please!
