How do hibernation/aestivation happen?

I read on wikipedia that a squirrel injected with the bodyfluids of a hibernating fellow is more prone to hibernation. Ifhibernation/aestivation are driven by biochemicals and not merelythe weather, can the process be induced in higher beings such ashumans to replace surgical (etc) anesthesia? How is the onedifferent from the other?

I am not going to count the number of words. Use your common sense here. If you can't write more than a short paragraph about the article, then the article was not long enough. Articles that are too short will not receive full credit.

Out of all the different current environmental issues that we have. I decided to pick overpopulation. Overpopulation is a never-ending human tragedy that has been causing all sorts of environmental issues. Such as: Water pollution, resources crisis, gender imbalance, pollution, land pollution and more. One of the biggest tragedies that we are having is technology. Yes technology is great because it has the ability to save lives and have better medical treatments, but it also bad because have the time people are staying at their phones throughout their days. I think we have become worse and human communication and contact then when we had nothing and were forced to talk to people face to face. With all this population there has been an increase in deaths more than ever, immigration which is not good. We canât afford to help everyone that decides to come from one country to another. One thing that I have learned is Acid Rain. I have heard it before but never really understood it. It is basically rain that is acidic from the atmosphere from cars or industrial processes. Honestly Iâm not sure what we can do and help but we are overpopulated and itâs everyone and everything around us.

I've been reading through Paulsson (2002) and I am not sure whathe means by "lineage selection" in the second to last section. Thepaper deals with plasmid replication, and mostly concentrates onthe contrasting pressures from two levels of selection:

intracell selection - competition between plasmids ina single cell. A plasmid can undergo a cis-mutation andover-replicate, resulting in a higher intracell fitness than thefocal plasmid. The plasmids reproduce.
intercell selection - competition between cells. Cellswith a heavier load of plasmids will take longer to reproduce, andplasmids that produce a heavy load will have lower intercellfitness. The cells containing plasmids reproduce.

In this context, what does the third level of selection-- lineage selection -- mean? What reproduces? How do thelineages split or interact?

My guess

Does lineage selection simply mean group-selection on separatecolonies of cells? In that case, how are new lineages formed? Iwould expect this group level to select for zero levels of plasmids(since they place no loads on the cells and thus these groups ofcells will grow the fastest), but Paulsson (2002) suggests theopposite:

lineage selection could favor plasmid traits that help thepopulation of plasmid-containing cells to fight plasmid-freecells.

Is there a more detailed discussions of this available than theone section in Paulsson (2002)? Neither the unit of selection noreither the evolutionary or genetic lineage Wikipedia articlesaddress my question. The first only mentions lineage in passing,and the second two don't discuss models of selection.
