A piece of shrapnel from a roadside IED penetrated the tissue beneath the skull and posterior to the temporomandibular joint. The patient exhibits weakness in the upper body and can no longer move their left shoulder very easily or turn their head to the left. What Cranial nerve might be affected? the piece of shrapnel shows up on a ct scan and is only a tiny sliver of metal which is slowly shrinking as it dissolves in the tissue fluid. the nerve it affected was nearly severed as the metal passed through. what is the prognosis for the soldier regaining use of that part of his body?
