I need help identifying/understandining control and experimental groups. This is the scenario.

On a recent drive during a hot (90+), humid but rainy day, I noticed/heard a high-pitched sound coming from the right side/dash area of my car. I was about 30miles from home and became very concerned there was something wrong with the car that would cause me to be stranded. No other diagnostic or 'indicator' in the car registered any issues. Therefore, I decided to isolate the sound by eliminating certain factors (i.e. turning off the car, leaving the car on but turning off the AC, radio and etc.) I felt if I was able to isolate and/or eliminate the sound I could determine if it was an actual alarm I needed to be concerned with.
