In this class, we’ve learned that human variation exists. What about race? While there are social and cultural consequences of racial classifications, it is clear there is no real, biological basis for racial categories. However, many people continue to believe there is a biological distinction among people of different ancestry. This view is often promoted by overtly racist groups.

How good of a job does our culture do of countering this false information with a better, more scientifically informed perspective? Many people already have a nuanced understanding of this topic and/or strong opinions, so please make sure you are using information from our class in your post. Address the following questions (or add in a perspective of your own) in an original post of at least 250 words and a response post to another student.

Does our culture reinforce or keep alive the idea that there are biological differences among races or does it actively oppose this idea? Try to be as specific as possible.

Review the following case study:

Maria, a 30-year-old woman from Puerto Rico and the mother of two boys, was hospitalized after overdosing on sleeping medication. For two months prior to the attempt, she had been seeking therapy for tiredness, loss of appetite, and sleep disturbances. Her therapist noted that she exhibited significant hopelessness, fatigue, and irritability. Additionally, Maria was low-keyed, restrained in behavior, avoided eye contact, and found it difficult to verbalize her thoughts and feelings.

The overdose occurred after Maria’s husband, Rick, her high school sweetheart, refused to allow her to attend night school. Maria had registered for a college course because she wanted to advance in her current job. The therapist supported Maria’s decision, believing it could also help her gain confidence in her daily life. When Rick found out about this went into a rage, tearing up her registration papers and tossing out her books. He refused to go to therapy with Maria or discuss the matter further.
