(The Funk) Wrestling season was in full swing, and the "E'hawks of Emmetsburg High school were the team to beat at the State Championships. Coach Eliot had started his boys on an "informal" training regimen the first day of summer. Diligently, the "E'hawks adhered to their conditioning program of running, lifting, and stretching. Shaun, the "E'hawks heavyweight wrestler, arrived at practice on the Monday before the championships with eight pimples spread between the left side of his mouth and nose. Another four lesions were clustered just below his left eye, and Shaun’s skin was noticeably reddened. His teammates teased him about his zits, so Shaun promptly pinned each tormenter to the mat during practice. When Shaun woke up Tuesday morning he was dismayed to find that his old lesion had ruptured, oozed, and formed an unsightly crust that resembled brown sugar. Additionally, new lesions had formed. Shaun knew this was not an acne outbreak. He had “funk”, the generic term wrestlers applied to the many communicable skin infections to which they are regularly exposed. Shaun knew this meant possible disqualification from the state championships. During his morning shower, Shaun borrowed his mother’s expfoliating “puff” and used it to scrub his face vigorously. Since his skin was now even redder, Shaun next borrowed his sister’s makeup to try and hide his problem.

1. From the symptoms described, what common skin infection do you suspect Shaun has contracted?

What pathogens is/are responsible for this disease?

2. Who is at greatest risk of getting this infection and why?

3. What causes the lesion that Shaun is experiencing on his skin?
