Metropolitan Hospital’s Infection Control Committee has identified an outbreak of infection within their large university hospitals. The infection control practitioners have collected and analyzed surveillance data and reviewed charts of patients with fever or positive microbiology cultures. When the outbreak first occurred, they investigated the cluster of cases involved, all cases are believed to have been identified, and commonalities are being identified as well, in hopes of closing in soon on discovering both the reservoir and the means of transmission of the organism from that reservoir.
