The main role of the protein hemoglobin is to transport oxygen. Red blood cells use hemoglobin to pick up oxygen from the lungs and then drop it off at subsequent cells. Blood also carries sugar (glucose) around the body. Glucose is picked up in the intestine and dropped off subsequent cells. When an individual has sickle cell anemia, blood does not flow properly and oxygen and sugar are not transported effectively.
