Janine Benyus: Biomimicry in action

A self-proclaimed nature nerd, Janine Benyus' concept of biomimicry has galvanized scientists, architects, designers and engineers into exploring new ways in which nature's successes can inspire humanity.

Why you should listen. In the world envisioned by science author Janine Benyus, a locust's ability to avoid collision within a roiling cloud of its brethren informs the design of a crash-resistant car; a self-cleaning leaf inspires a new kind of paint, one that dries in a pattern that enables simple rainwater to wash away dirt; and organisms capable of living without water open the way for vaccines that maintain potency even without refrigeration -- a hurdle that can prevent life-saving drugs from reaching disease-torn communities. Most important, these cool tools from nature pull off their tricks while still managing topreserve the environment that sustains them, a life-or-death lesson that humankind is in need of learning.

For this discussion,I'd like to explore humanities connection to nature. In the past, humans looked to what was around them to solve their problems. To fly we designed airplane wings like birds. To swim faster we designed fins that fit on our feet. Dr. Janius expressed how much genius there is in nature for us to model and be able to solve our problems.

5. Alzheimer’s dementia is a neurodegenerative disorder that results in severe cognitive impairment. Researchers hypothesize that Alzheimer’s is due to low Acetylcholine activity in the cerebral cortex. How could a researcher test this hypothesis? Justify your answer.

7. Dr. Butthurt, a prominent pain researcher, has recently discovered that a Chinese form of meditation called Tai Chi can be a very effective pain-relief method. In Dr. Butthurt’s studies, he found that people in pain experience profound pain relief after participating in just 30 minutes of Tai Chi meditation. Now, Dr. Butthurt wants to determine the neural mechanism by which Tai Chi works to relieve pain. The first hypothesis he wants to test is that Tai Chi works because it stimulates endorphin activity in the brain. How can Dr. Butt-hurt test this hypothesis? Explain. [~1 paragraph]
