Document Summary

Cutaneous: organ of the integumentary system; aka skin. Mucous: lines cavities and tubes that open to the outside of the body serous: lines body cavities that lack openings to the outside; reduce frictions. Warmed blood goes through the hypothalamus ! signals muscles of dermal blood vessels to relax (vasodilation) ! more heat escapes through skin to the environment. *at the same time vasoconstriction of deeper blood vessels forces blood to go to the surface ! skin reddens. When temperature drops, vasoconstriction of dermal vessels or stimulation of muscle fibers ! erector pili muscle contracts (goosebumps! ), shivering begins and increased cellular respiration ! increased heat production. Radiation: most heat loss in the body; heat moves from warmer area to cooler area outside body. Hypothermia: rising of body temperature above normal levels. Conduction: heat moves from the body directly into the molecules of a cooler object in contact with body surface (sitting on a cold surface)
