Document Summary

Selective toxicity meaning they target certain essential biological structures or processes present in microorganism but not in human cells. Therapeutic index or therapeutic window meaning that any dose will be toxic at a certain concentration. If you have two drugs, the one that takes the larger dose to become toxic is the safer drug. The higher the dose, the less toxicity the drug is. Therapeutic dose- is the does you need to have the effect you want. It is important that the drug: targets the essential structure or pathway in the microorganism, dispensable to the host. Have poor selective toxicity and low therapeutic index. Slide 75- broad spectrum of activity for antibiotics means it kills a wide range of microorganisms. Narrow spectrum in contrast kills a limited range of bacteria. Broad spectrum antimicrobials can destroy normal flora found in respiratory, digestive and other tracts in the body. As a result, using these can produce more disease.
