Research on binding of antibodies and antigens - 1908 nobel prize. Overall hypothesis: develop drugs that are specific to disease cells. Arsenical drugs: target disease: syphilis, compound 606 (6th in the 6th group of compounds that were synthesized) - was effective in treating syphilis --> salvarsan, alexander fleming (1881-1955) Fleming observed that the bacteria surrounding the penicillium colonies were destroyed: attempted to characterize penicillin, howard florey - 1939.
