Document Summary
Some behaviors cannot be explained by classical conditioning: - Ex- throwing ball playing guitar answering telephone opening door. It only connects naturally occurring responses to new stimuli called visceral responses- gutly action(emotional response). Unlike classical conditioning, operant conditioning relates to learning of responses that don"t occur naturally. Operant conditioning emphasizes that people operate on their environment to achieve some consequence. Response contingency r->s the response is associated with its consequence. Reinforcer is any stimulus that increases the probability that preceding response will be repeated. (reward) ex- food candy money sex etc. The value of a reinforcer depends in part on the organism"s current state and past history. Ex- if a guy is stuffed with food , then food is not a good reinforcer. Food deprived rat is put in a cage. Experimenters set up lever such that the rat gets food while pressing lever.
