CHEM 111 Lecture 25: CHEM111 Class 25
Document Summary
Chem111 lecture 25 ions and bonding. These are ions with the same number of electrons. When given an isoelectric group, look for the lowest atomic number out of the group. You should be able to identify isoelectronic ions and out them in relative order of size. Electrostatic interation forces is proportional to the charges and inversely proportional to distance squared. The net effect is known as a chemical bond (not easy to give a simple definition), ionic, metallic, covalent. Bond energy is the same as bond strength. Strength tracks with length and order: shorter bonds are stronger; higher bond order, greater strength. Often chemists will draw pictures of the structure of a molecule. The resulting picture only shows connectivity not geometry. Chemists draw structures based on a set of simple rules. Lewis structures (lewis dot structures or lewis diagram) Simplest lewis structures are those for the elements.
