Families cannot be seen as vulnerable, needy, helpless, etc. nor can they be seen as responsible for their child"s disability. Parenthood is a huge responsibility - lots of responsibilities. Reactions to having a child with a disability. Emotional disorganization (anger, guilt, depression, shame, lowered self- esteem, possible rejection of child) Provide information - share strengths and areas of growth. Remember that families are an important part of the team. Use the family as a resource, they know the student better than you in certain environments. Maintain mindset that families are diverse and will have different needs. Strive to seek to understand - do not be defensive or intimidated by families. Help families be realistic, yet optimistic about the future. Build upon success )with student and family) Do not be afraid to say i don"t know .
