Document Summary

Should be an integral part of the team. Think about using term families , not always parents . Better understand overall needs of the student two main environments - school and home. Bridge programs home to school and school to home. Families cannot be seen as vulnerable, needy, helpless, etc. nor can they be seen as responsible for their child"s disability. Try not to label families as an adversary, needy, etc. Families are an advocate for change, they can speak out for change. Treat families as you would want to be treated yourself. All families are different and have different needs. Reactions to having a child with a disability. Emotional disorganization (anger, guilt, depression, shame, lowered self-esteem, possible rejection of child, etc. ) Takes time, and not all families reach acceptance. Feel concern for sibling, uncertainty, feel left out, feel required to do too much. Teacher - family communication is a two-way street.
