Psychosocial crisis of early childhood and middle childhood. Psychosocial crisis- stage specific sources of anxiety as a result of social expectations/demands. Dominant tension- mastering and taking on more challenges. Initiative- extension of autonomy, persistence and determination leads to initiative (motivation) Internalize expectations for behavior and success, develop identity and self esteem. Guilt- you failed to live up to your own standards. The should years, they learn what they should do and how they should act. Relationship between identification (our responsibility to provide kids with realistic expectations and working models leading to success) and guilt. Anxiety about competence, shame, and guilt block enthusiasm and willingness to challenge and master. Dominant tension- mastering work, developing attitude towards work in adult years. Central process- education, all in preparation for high school & beyond, provide foundational tools of education before tools for working. Education is a form of intervention on anxiety.
