- stage specific sources of anxiety that individuals experience as a result of social
expectations and demands
By way of review, what is a psychosocial crisis? Stage specific sources of ANXIETY
Infancy: Trust versus Mistrust
- failure to resolve this anxiety results in mistrustful attitude towards others
Toddler Years: Autonomy versus Shame/Doubt
- pressuring kids to control themselves in socially appropriate years
- social control, self regulation
- the successful resolution is increasing confidence in the child to act in an autonomous
way
- in order for me to allow you to do this yourself, you have to regulate yourself
- kids with a sense of will (inter determination and persistence)
Early Childhood: Initiative versus Guilt
- expecting kids to master more, take more challenges, learn more in school or peer
relationships, now you have to learn stuff in addition to regulating yourself in social
appropriate ways
- initiative - an extension of autonomy - kids with persistence and inter determination will
development a sense of initative
- the kids who don’t resolve in this crisis - shame (feeling like you’re a failure in the eyes of
others) and doubt - guilt
- internalize expectations for behavior and success - develop self esteem - guilt = you
have failed to live up to your own standards
- shame is externally, guilt is internally (fail to do what you think you SHOULD do)
- “SHOULD” years - being taught what you should do and how you should act
- kids begin to internalize the expectations

Central Process: Identification
- kids are being socialized on what they should do, understand what’s expected of them,
gender roles, evaluate themselves
- all about model set for kids to emulate, model that establishes the SHOULDS

tension - mastering your work - focus on schoolwork and learning, tension
because preparation for life, ramp up pressure on you because childhood is
running out, preparing yourself for adult years (career, work), in preparation for
you to go onto bigger and more important things
Central Process: Education why education?
- in order to provide you with the tools you need to work in the adult world, you need to be
educated, educators are important at this time, no tools for success = barrier for
success, no math skills = can’t have a job that has to do with math, developing an
attitude towards work that will carry to your adults years, feel competent
