Document Summary
Module 7: the earth"s resources and environmental protection. Easily transported over land but not sea. Needs to be liquefied for sea travel. Most important resource in the world (politically) Many people we are moving toward peak oil which would result in a fast decline in the production and use of oil. Alternative to fossil fuels with a few drawbacks: potential for hazardous accidents, produces harmful waste, high cost. Second most commonly used renewable energy source. Energy from inner earth used for heating. Energy collected from sun and used directly in homes. Not as practical for large scale energy production with current technology. Landfill disposal: 55% of solid waste, buried under earth, can contaminate groundwater. Incineration: converts waste to energy, drawbacks. Concentrates waste so areas where this is stored experience greater harm due. Concentrates waste so areas where this is stored experience greater harm due to the higher concentration. Recycling: reduces need to store waste, drawbacks.
