Industrial revolution helped facilitate the emergence of a real global market. Advances in machines and transportation made it possible to transport raw materials, products, and people much further and much faster than before. Advances in communication technologies (telegraph, phone) made it easier to communicate globally. Mass production meant countries could specialize in different goods and then trade these with each other. Britain in textiles, germany in coal, (parts of) us in grain. Industrialization is the big difference between first and second wave. European empires colonized large parts of africa and asia, exploiting their people and natural resources for production and cementing their power. Between 1815 1914, 10 million square miles of territory and 400 million people were added to the british empire. In 1924, british empire covered a fifth of the world"s land.
