Looks at historical waves of globalization through the lens of globalized food production and consumption. We build on his chapter to sketch out these prior waves generally. Racism, belief in superiority of white europeans. European colonial expansion between the 16th and 18th century galvanized a first major wave of globalization. It facilitated the emergence of a nascent global market and global consciousness. European colonizers borrowed money from home countries to extract raw materials in colonies.
