Document Summary
Psych 7a - lecture 14 - development (cont. ) Give subjects stories that pose a moral dilemma. Example: husband needs expensive medication to save wife"s life (heinz dilemma) Preconventional response: stealing is wrong because he"ll get caught and go to jail . Conventional response: stealing is wrong because everyone will think he"s a criminal, or no one will think he"s bad for stealing the drug, but would think he"s a horrible husband if he doesn"t! . Postconventional response: if it was me, by letting my wife die without doing everything i could, i would not be living up to my own personal standard of conscience . Development proceeds through 8 stages, each marked by a specific crisis. We must resolve these crises successfully in order to continue on a course toward healthy social development. Each crisis can have a positive or negative outcome. Resolving each conflict in a positive direction helps create a well-adjusted person that can deal with life"s crises.
