Newborns have very little control over their motor skills. Reflexes help them get through the first few months of helplessness. Grasp reflex: their fingers curl up when their palm is stroked. Babinski reflex: their toes curl up when the foot is stroked. Rooting reflex: when something touches their cheek, they will turn their head and put whatever that"s touching them in their mouths. They prefer sights and sounds that promote social responsiveness such as: They can discriminate bw ba and da. Habituation: responsiveness to a stimuli decreases due to repeated exposure (if they keep hearing the same sound, they learn to tune it out) Children develop intense bonds w/ their caregivers. Around 6-8 months, babies are able to evaluate whether people are familiar or unfamiliar (and possibly threatening). Attachment: the emotional bond bw young children and their caregiver.
