Embryonic period (2 nd week 8 th week) An egg that has been fertilized by a sperm cell. After a week or so, the mass of cells (now called blastocysts) consists of about 100 cells. Outer part of blastocyst forms the placenta. Nervous system begins to form and function. Embryo grows to about an inch in length. 6 months organs developed enough to give fetus a chance at survival. Also at 6 months fetus is responsive to sound. Newborns have very little control over their motor skills. Reflexes help them get through first few months of helplessness: Newborns prefer sights and sounds that promote social responsiveness: Discriminate between different speech sounds (e. g. ba vs. da ) Schema cognitive framework that represents and organizes information. Assimilation interpreting one"s new experience in terms of one"s existing schemas. Accomodation adapting one"s current schemas to incorporate new information. Lasts from birth to 2 years of age.
