Document Summary

Speciation- splitting event generating new species from single ancestor. Biological species concept, different species reproductively isolated no gene flow considered distinct species. Prezygotic isolation- animals from different species cannot breed. Postzygotic isolation- babies of animals from different species die out. Hybrid viability- offspring cannot develop and die as embryo. Morphospecies concept- species are different in size, shape, or other morphological features. Population independent and isolated from gene flow more distinguishing features. Polymorphic species can split into two species with different phenotypes. Cannot identify cryptic species that differ in non morphological traits. Phylogenetic species concept- uses evolutionary history to distinguish species. Monophyletic group- part of phylogenetic tree containing an ancestral population with all its descendents. Group of black-bellied seedcracker disruptive selection occurs. Birds with long or short beaks survive beast. Dispersal- population colonize new area to form new population. Vicariance- population split by physical barrier and isolated into subgroups.
