Perception - the process through which we interpret our experiences & come to our unique understandings. Perception affects how we communicate w/ others & how we interpret others communication. Understanding perception"s role in the communication process is crucial. Perception - can be thought of as our interpretation of things. We perceive after selection info to focus on. Schemas - mental structures that help us put together bits of info to form patterns & create meaning. Schemas help us understand & anticipate how it works or should work. Can change as you continue to interact with more people, places, & things. Help us take shortcuts when taking in vast amounts of info. Assimilation - new info is incorporated into pre existing schemas. Ex: add info that cats are not always furry. Accomodation - existing schemas may be altered or new schemas formed as you learn new info.
