CMN 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Stress Management, Active Listening
Document Summary
Ted talk - how miscommunication happens (and how to avoid it) Communication is complex, even when f2f w/ other person. Understanding what happens when we communicate can help prevent miscommunication. Message moves directly from one person to another. This model does not account for communication"s complexity. This model considers communication as a game of catch . As we communicate our message, we receive feedback from the other party. One person can interpret message 1 way, and other interprets it another. Our perceptual filters continually shift meanings & interpretations. Perceptions can be shaped by knowledge, past experience, age, race, gender, ethnicity, religion, family background etc. People interpret the other person"s message based on their relationship w/ that person & the unique understanding of the semantics & connotations of the words being used. Can also be distracted (ex: traffic, emotion, etc. ) Adding more people w/ various perceptions makes communication more complex. Practices that can help with better communication.
