Fear and understanding are reasons to critically interrogate the media. So powerful that we don"t understand it. Mythos-we believe what the media tells us is significant. Ethos-who i am and who to trust. It does this even if we don"t understand it. Sender gatekeeper message (channel) receiver receiver to sender feedback: problems: messages do not flow smoothly from sender to receiver, images and meanings are constantly changing, senders have little to no control over how their message is perceived. Skyscraper model: too linear, problematic relationships, high culture. The set of cultural products held in high esteem by a culture, or denoting the culture of ruling social groups: low culture. Ruins the imagination and undermines the ability to recognize great art. Inundates and drives out high culture: high culture and low culture need to be seen as cultural forms that compete over resources, attention, priority, and validation. Map model: ongoing process, opportunities for adventure/new experiences, questions false nostalgia.
