Material symbols: other animals use tools, only humans create objects to which we assign significance. Meanings are context specific and can change through time. Ar(cid:272)haeology"s strengths: strengths are culture change and variation through time and space. Human activity is situated in space: humans perform activities in a range of places, locations have special uses. Provenience: the location of materials in three-dimensional space. Usually recorded by hand via rulers, tape measure, squares, plumb bobs, etc. Measure distance of object to known point (datum) Association: spatial relationship of different things and places. Context: an interpretation of the association of objects. Remove material form an object to create something. Unmodified or non-tool material that result from human activity. Ex: hearth (pit used to burn materials), storage pit , post mold, structure. Form when humans modify their surroundings: single event: Short term, objects are usually found where they were deposited: palimpsest: Site that is visited or modified more than once.
