BMB 420 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Clarithromycin, Adaptive Immune System, Cytotoxic T Cell
Document Summary
Antral: lower portion of the stomach that curves, normal acid secretion, lower levels of bacterium restricted to antrum and formation of ulcers. Corpus-predominant pangastritis: reduced acid, higher levels of bacteria in stomach, atrophic gastritis, gastric cancer. Aspirin lowers ph which make it easier for ulcers to form. Duodenal ulcers don"t develop onto cancer because acid keeps bacterial growth in check. Gastric ulcers form because secretion is decreased bacteria grow unchecked. Shut down cytotoxic t cells, upregulating t- regulatory cells, therefor interfering with generation of adaptive immune response. Once treated, lymphomas usually go away on their own. Stool antigen test (bacteria in the stool), less effective than urea breath test. Bacteria can escape antibiotics and become resistant to them when they are exposed later on. If world is approaching 15-20% resistance to an anti-biotic it isn"t a good one to use. Triple therapy is typically used as a gold standard worldwide.
