17 views3 pages

Document Summary

Realm of ends: all of us are lawgivers, vision of principle, legal, moral order, promotes universal autonomy. Acted outwardly to your own manner: acted accordingly to your law, not abided by the law. Problem with contingency: not absolute, the ground of the law is the rational agent, you are absolute, treated with respect, period. Cannot treat anyone, including yourself, merely as a means: waiter, cab driver = means, must be recognized as ends. Laws = law: categorical imperative, everybody has absolute value, not just royalty and the rich, sovereign = does not listen to anyone other than yourself, freedom, belong to both legislator and subject. All rational: all subject to law and able to change it, duty = respect to the law. Autonomous: free, call your own shots, live according to my own law, categorical imperative, freedom is through the law, formula for which it is universal, live with disrespect = not free.
