Document Summary

Chapter 4: nucleic acids and the rna world x-rays, builds structure based on electrons. Nuclear magnetic resonance(nmr) spectroscopy- puts isotopes into proteins, giant magnets(mri), builds structure based on protons. Deoxyribonucleic acid(dna)- nucleic acid composed of deoxyribonucleotides that carries genetic info. Occurs as double helix w/ 2 strands connected by noncovalent bonds(polymer). Rna world hypothesis- rna both stored genetic info and catalyzed own replication, so rna was before dna/protein during chemical evolution. Rna- single stranded nucleic acid composed of ribonucleotides. Catalytic component of ribosomes(rrna), transporters of amino acids(trna), and messages of dna code required for protein synthesis(mrna). Nucleic acid(polymer)- macromolecule made of nucleotide monomers, used to transmit hereditary info(composed of dna and rna). A phosphate group on the 5" carbon of the sugar forms a phosphodiester bond with a hydroxyl on the 3" carbon of a second sugar, forming a sugar-phosphate backbone(forms nucleic acid polymer).
