BIOS10115 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Streptococcal Pharyngitis, Sebaceous Gland, Digestion
Document Summary
Immune system: 1st line of defense: innate/nonspecific. Help us defend against anything: 2nd line of defense: adaptive/specific. Bodies can recognize and target specific microorganism. Specific vs. nonspecific defenses: specific (adaptive) respond to particular agents. Antibodies, specific cells: nonspecific (innate- born with) responds to all invaders. Skin= largest organ of human body and excellent physical barrier to microorganisms: tattoos and piercings- breaking barrier. Its normal flora inhibit pathogen colonization: mucous membranes. Intestines, esophagus: hair on head, in nose, eyelashes, many (cid:498)symptoms(cid:499) are actually physical barriers. Shows body is trying to get rid of bad microbe. Chemical barriers: lysozyme enzyme that we make naturally, breaks down cell walls. Found in saliva, tears, mucus: salt. Plasma proteins, electrolytes, organic nutrients, organic wastes, water. Platelets (came from cells but not cells) White blood cells (leukocytes: go around patrolling and eating up foreign things. Originally came from one type of stem cell in bone marrow pluripotent stem cell.
