Document Summary

Gender can also be seen as a verb rather than a noun. We have biological categories of male and female. Gender: to assign the culturally-defined attributes of masculinity and femininity based on perceived biological sex. Ex. gender reveal parties, baby girls get their ears pierced in some cultures, hair bows for baby girls, pink=girl and blue=boy, toys for toddlers, clothing, hairstyles. The meanings of gender have changed over time. Gender norms reflect the time and place to which they belong. Ex. in the early 1900s, pink was considered a boy"s color and blue was a girl"s color. Sex and gender must be understood as different categories of analysis.
