PSY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Classical Conditioning
Document Summary
Learning: a relatively permanent behavior change due to experience. Neutral stimulus (ns) - a stimulus that elicits no response before conditioning. Ex. bell ringing, light going on, music playing. Unconditioned stimulus (us) - a stimulus that produces an automatic/natural response without prior conditioning/learning. Ex. meat powder, loud sudden noise, bad meat. Unconditioned response (ur) - an unlearned/unconditioned reaction that is automatically/naturally elicited by the unconditioned stimulus. Conditioned stimulus (cs) - the stimulus that is paired with the us (has to come before us) Initially, it does not elicit a response (ns) Following conditioning, it elicits a response (cs) A bell (pavlov), paired with meat powder (the bell leads to salivation after conditionining) Conditioned response (cr) - the learned response to the cs that occurs after the cs-us pairing. Usually the same or very similar to the ur.
