Some parents also consider that their child has indirectly enhanced their lives.
➢ Enriched my life
➢ Would’ve gone back to work = more hours and in school holidays
➢ Help to appreciate all the good things in life more
Parents describe how their child has given them the opportunity to meet people who they would not
otherwise have met.
Also describe being enabled to develop or become more aware of personal qualities.
➢ Becoming a more patient person and more involved
★ Having to meet specific needs, made Val learn more about herself
Val became more broadminded, never judge people, if a child is having a tantrum, don’t make a
judgement, you don’t know what’s going on.
Some disabilities are hidden and so you don’t know what’s going on.
Bringing your Child Home
Some children with complex and continuing medical needs spend a considerable period of time in
hospital early in their lives.
If a baby is in hospital, the early experience of being a parent are very different to those with healthy
babies at home.
➢ To which extent are they included in their baby’s life
Some parents may have one child in hospital and others at home, may be hard trying to split time
between both.
➢ Friday to Monday = see Sophia in Stoke
➢ Monday to Tuesday = spend time with Zak
➢ Wednesday = take Zak to see Sophia
➢ Thursday = spend time at home with Zak
Before baby comes home, there is a lot of planning and practical preparations.
