Study of advertisements in magazines showed that western ones emphasized independence more than asian. Americans responded more positively to ads that emphasize individualistic ideals, opposite for asians. Little doubt that arousing fear increases impact of messaged. Fear is aversive state you want to reduce. Model articulated how threatening messages can influence behaviour when you are motivated to protect yourself you will change behaviour. Two beliefs arouse threat problem is sever, you are susceptible. In order for messages about health to change behaviour they must also believe recommendations effectiveness and personal capability of performance.
