PSYC 30 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Ingroups And Outgroups, Psych, Autobiographical Memory
Document Summary
Difference between western and eastern cultures with schemas. May perceive the same event or person quite differently. Stereotype: set of characteristics that someone associates with members of a group; cognitive structure. Social psychologist mainly interested in negative stereotypes to attempt to diminish prejudice and discrimination. Often assumptions can be oversimplified or wrong altogether. Groups you belong in are called ingroup vs. outgroup. Stereotype of ingroup is usually favourable whereas outgroups can be unfavourable. Outgroup homogeneity effect: tendency to overestimate the similarity within groups that we are not part of. Once a stereotype has been activated it can effect how we interpret ambiguous information. Automatic process: a judgement that we cannot control and happens without our awareness. Controlled process: judgement that is intentional and requires cognitive resources. Reconstructive memory: trying to cognitively rebuild the past based on cues and estimates. Autobiographical memory: stored information about the self, such as goals, traits, experiences and other qualities.
