PSYC 30 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Margot Kidder, Black Model, Psych
Document Summary
Prejudice: negative attitude toward members of a group, which is often very strongly held. Discrimination: negative, harmful behaviour toward people based on their group membership. Genocide: an attempt to systematically eliminate an ethnic group through banishment or murder. Implicit attitudes can influence our prejudice behaviour without our knowledge (margot kidder) Aversive racism: modern kind of prejudice held by those who don"t consider themselves prejudice but still nevertheless harbour negative beliefs and hostile feelings toward members of minority groups. Study of prejudice behaviour in 1989 v 1999 -> blatant prejudice declined, but when qualifications were ambiguous, more people recommended the white than black participant. Change the way we measure prejudice, maybe use a iat. We may affirm too much uniformity -> out-group homogeneity effect. May have stereotypes of groups that are competing for desired resources. People may feel uncomfortable in unfamiliar groups -> anxiety is labeled as dislike. Humans are not unbiased or open processors of information related to stereotypes.
