Document Summary

Tissue a group of structurally and functionally related cells that come together to perform common functions. Different tissue types are distinguished by kind and number of cells and composition of the extracellular matrix (ecm) Extracellular matrix is a collection of extracellular molecules secreted by support cells that provides structural and biochemical support to the surrounding cells (ground substance + protein fibres) Epithelial tissue: lining tissue of the external and internal surfaces and cavities of the body, providing a barrier between the body and external environment and the organs and fluid-filled cavities. They consist of sheets of cells tightly packed together with no visible ecm. They are avascular don"t have a direct bloody supply. Protection: many layers to withstand mechanical and thermalk. Immune defense: physical defense and imbedded with immune cells to fight diseases. Secretion: form glands that produce oils and hormones. Transport: selectively permeable barriers that secrete/absorb specific material across the surface.
