Dr. Corey Keyes: Mental Health and the Concept of Flourishing
• Health is more than the absence of sickness or illness; it is rather the presence of well
being
• The world is undergoing a demographic transition and epidemiological transition
• Demographic transition: people are living longer, there is less premature death, and
people are more educated than there was long ago
o Industrialization is responsible for this
o Today people
• Epidemiological transition: some, but not all countries have more individuals living
longer AND healthier lives

o This requires a change in environment- better access to healthy foods, excise
opportunities
• Rates of mental illness is continuing to rise on college campuses, including depression,
anxiety, etc.
• More students are entering college with mental illnesses
• More students are leaving college with mental illnesses
• Public health: changing the condition under which people live to improve health
outcomes
o Examples: improved sanitation, maternal and infant care became more
important, safer work environments
o All of this public health changed help reduce mortality from infectious diseases
and improve health

think to improving health
• We need to invest in and promote good mental health
o This includes: how we treat each other, defining purpose in ilfe
• The average age of the onset of mental disorders was once 45 years old, now they onset
age ranges from 15-20
• Emotional well-being means
o Happiness
o Satisfied
o Interested in life
• Happiness is an activity
o If you do well, and you function well
• What contributes to psychological well-being
o Are you accepting of yourself?
o Do you have positive relationships with others?
o Personal growth?
o Have you defined your purpose in life?
