“tages of Change
• The transtheoretical model is used for changing behaviors, specifically health risk
behaviors
o It was developed in the 1980s
o This change model has become widely acceptable
o This model describes change as a process
• There are 6 stages of change: Pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action,
maintenance, termination
o This model is not a linear progression, rather a cycle
o Most successful changers go through the cycle multiple times
o Pre-contemplation
▪ At this stage, many people are unwilling to change
▪ Many deny that they have a problem
▪ Strategies used: consciousness raising, social liberation
o Contemplation
▪ Individuals are still on the fence and uncertain about the change
▪ Looking for benefits to changing
▪ Strategies used: consciousness raising social liberation, emotional
arousal, self-reevaluation
o Preparation
▪ Individuals are planning how they will accomplish their change
▪ This usually lasts about 1 month
▪ Strategies used: social liberation, emotional arousal, self-reevaluation
o Action
▪ Individuals are beginning to make visible change by putting their plan into
action
▪ Can last for 6 months or longer
▪ Strategies used: social liberation, reward, countering, environmental
control, helping relationships
o Maintenance
▪ Individuals have met their goal, and are sustaining their change
▪ Strategies used: countering, environmental control, helping relationships
o Termination
▪ Individuals no longer feel tempted by old behaviors
▪ No change of recycling through the process
• “trategies for the change process are processes of change (strategies are listed under
each stage)
Motiational Interieing
